Montreal Laughter League: Wellness through laughter

Laughter buddy in pink

Getting healthy with the new way to laugh every Sunday!

The Montreal Laughter League welcomes Montrealers to experience the growing movement of Laughercize! Participants combine laughter and breathing exercises to reap the health benefits of laughter. Join me, the Montreal Laughter Champion, every Sunday this summer (except holidays).

“What’s Laughercize?”

Laughercize was created by Montreal laughologist Albert Nerenberg, adapted from Laughter Yoga created by Dr. Madan Kataria. With Laughercize, anyone can laugh without needing humour, jokes or comedy. Participants use laughter exercises, like the Diabolical Laugh and the Clap Laugh, to trigger their own laughter.

“But why are you faking laughter? Isn’t that kinda weird?”

The human body does not differentiate between fake and real laughter. It has been scientifically proven that our bodies and minds benefit no matter how laughter is triggered. It lowers blood pressure, reduces stress, and strengthens your immune system. At least 10 to 15 minutes of continuous, loud and deep belly laughter provides optimal health benefits.

“This is the new science of laughter,” says Nerenberg, director of the documentary Laughology. “There’s been an explosion of applications of therapeutic laughter. This is laughter without reason, the laughter of children. Most adults have lost a lot of laughter, and we’re trying to bring it back.”

“So laughter is good for me?”

Laughing regularly is a great way to stay healthy. So instead of waiting around for funny things to happen, we get together and laugh for no reason, because we want to take care of our health. And it just feels great. There’s no better way to relax than a good laugh.

“That…sounds like fun!”

The Montreal Laughter League provides a safe environment where one can laugh loudly and heartily for no reason. The Montreal Laughter League is not leaving laughter to chance. This is a guaranteed way of reaping the health benefits of laughter.

“How do I get there?”
